Visible module damage can raise bigger questions than what can be seen on the surface. Cracked glass, unusual breakage patterns, clamp marks, loose mounting, frame damage, or handling marks may point to installation stress, transport damage, product weakness, or site-specific conditions. Intertek CEA helps clients document visible PV module issues, assess likely contributing factors, and define the next steps needed to advance the investigation.
Why this matters
When damage is visible, decisions often need to be made quickly. Should modules be replaced? Is the issue isolated or repeating? Does the evidence support a supplier, installer, warranty, or insurance discussion? A structured visual inspection gives clients a clear record of what was observed, where it was found, and whether the pattern suggests further testing is needed.
Why visual inspection alone may not be enough
Visual inspection is a useful starting point, but it does not always explain the full issue. Some damage mechanisms are hidden inside the module or only appear under electrical or thermal testing. For example, visible glass breakage may need to be assessed together with mounting conditions, clamp position, torque checks, EL imaging, IR inspection, IV-curve testing, or laboratory analysis. The value of visual inspection is that it helps define what should be tested next, instead of guessing.
How Intertek CEA performs visual inspection
Intertek CEA inspects PV modules as delivered, staged, or installed on the rack, depending on the investigation objective. We align the inspection criteria with the client before fieldwork begins. Where applicable, the same criteria and AQL approach used during factory quality assurance or pre-shipment inspection can be applied in the field.
During inspection, Intertek CEA may review mounting conditions against the approved mounting method, check screw torque, analyze crack shape, position, and distribution, and document clamp position, breakage, frame damage, or other visual cues that may affect safe and reliable operation. Findings are recorded with photographic evidence and summarized in a clear PDF report.
